Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) can be spread through sex without a condom. You might not know that you have an STI because not all people get symptoms, but you can still pass on infection. STIs can be spread through oral, vaginal and anal sex. If left untreated some can lead to infertility. To avoid STIs and unplanned pregnancies always use condoms. You can get them free from Brook and other sexual health services.

For more information on STIs and where you can get free and confidential help, check out: www.playingsafely.co.uk and www.ruthinking.co.uk or contact your local Genito Urinary Medicine Clinic (GUM), details in the phone book.

Chlamydia Flyer CHLAMYDIA is the most common, curable sexually transmitted infection in the UK. There are often no obvious signs that you have it because it can stay hidden for months or even years. If left untreated, Chlamydia can lead to infertility and Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. It is most common in women under 25 and men under 30 but anyone who has sex without a condom is at risk. The good news is that if found early enough, Chlamydia can usually be cured completely with antibiotics. For further information about Chlamydia or any other Sexually Transmitted Infection contact your local Department of Genito Urinary Medicine (GUM). They will be able to help you and all services are free and confidential.
Genital Warts Flyer GENITAL WARTS are small, fleshy growths, which can affect the vagina, anus or penis. The warts may itch but are usually painless and are spread by skin to skin contact during sex. Anyone who has sex without a condom is at risk. The growths can appear on their own or in groups, can be difficult to see and often come back after treatment. For further information about Genital Warts, or any other Sexually Transmitted Infection, contact your local Department of Genito Urinary Medicine (GUM). They will be able to help you and all services are free and confidential.
Gonorrhoea Flyer GONORRHOEA is spread through oral, anal and vaginal sex. If left untreated Gonorrhoea can lead to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease causing infertility in women. In men it can cause inflammation of the testicles and prostate gland. Anyone who has sex with an infected person without a condom is at risk. Although sometimes there are no symptoms, Gonorrhoea can cause pain or a burning sensation during urination. It can also cause a discharge from the vagina, penis and anus. For further information about Gonorrhoea, or any other Sexually Transmitted Infection, contact your local Department of Genito Urinary Medicine (GUM). They will be able to help you and all services are free and confidential.
Pubic Lice Flyer PUBIC LICE are usually sexually transmittted, but can also be spread through close physical contact with an infected person. As well as living in pubic hair, they’re at home in underarm hair, hairy chests, eyelashes and occasionally in eyebrows and beards! Common symptoms include: itching in the infected areas, tiny brown eggs on pubic or other hair, black powder in your underwear (lice droppings) and you may even be able to see them. Luckily, they’re quite easily treated using a special shampoo or lotion, but itching may continue for a while after. For further information about Pubic Lice, or any other Sexually Transmitted Infection, contact your local Department of Genito Urinary Medicine (GUM). They will be able to help you and all services are free and confidential.
Syphilis Flyer
SYPHILIS The early symptoms of Syphilis are similar to many other infections. When symptoms are present, syphilis is very infectious and can be passed on more easily! Common symptoms include: a single sore that can appear anywhere on your body - usually small and painless. A rash then appears along with other symptoms which can include: fever, tiredness, headaches and/or a sore throat. For further information about Syphilis, or any other Sexually Transmitted Infection, contact your local Department of Genito Urinary Medicine (GUM). They will be able to help you and all services are free and confidential.
